The Child Psychotherapy Program is a two-year continuing education program for mental health professionals. This program is designed for psychotherapists who wish to enhance their ability to use psychoanalytic principles in their work with children, adolescents, and their families. This is an advanced level course, intended for degreed child therapists (e.g., psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and nurse practitioners). Familiarity with psychoanalytic thinking is a pre-requisite.
Seminars
Classes meet for 30 weeks each year. Three
interlocking components stress the integration of
theory with clinical practice.
▪Theoretical
Seminars are based on a developmental model, and study the
phases of child development and psychopathology through adolescence.
▪ Clinical
Conferences provide an opportunity to consider the aims and
techniques of psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy in a variety
of cases which are presented by current program
participants.
▪ A
Continuous Case Conference focuses on each phase of the therapeutic
process from evaluation through termination. Child-centered
work with parents and play therapy sessions with
the child are considered in detail.
A syllabus of readings accompanies the theoretical
seminars. Additional readings utilized to
emphasize the interface between theory and technique
may be suggested in both the Clinical Conferences and the Continuous
Case Conference.
Weekly child psychotherapy supervision is provided
by faculty members. Supervisory sessions focus
primarily on a careful examination of technical
issues and therapeutic processes as they develop in selected cases. A
major portion of the supervisory experience
involves the presentation and discussion of detailed process notes on
current psychotherapy cases. Work with
parents is also addressed in this component of the program.
