“Unfinished Business:  When Adult Men Return to the Analyst of Their Childhood.”

Speaker: Ruth Karush, MD

Discussant: William Wimmer, M.D.

Dr. Ruth K. Karush is a Training and Supervising Analyst and Supervising Child Analyst at The New York Psychoanalytic Institute.  She served as Chair of the Committee on Child and Adolescent Analysis (COCAA) of the American Psychoanalytic Association from 1999 to 2005 and again from 2007 to 2010.  Dr. Karush was the President of The Association for Child Psychoanalysis from 2004-2006 and currently serves as Co-Chair of its Program Committee.  She has written on the use of dream analysis in child analysis and on the vicissitudes of aggression in toddlers.

SUMMARY:   Two men who were analyzed by Dr. Karush as children returned to analytic treatment with her as adults. Mr. S had first seen her at age nine and his aggressive conflicts were the main focus of his childhood analysis.  When he returned to treatment, he complained of his inability to sustain a committed relationship with a woman.  Mr. C. had begun treatment at age seven and had presented with multiple problems including the imminent death of his father.  Interestingly, when he returned to analysis with Dr. Karush, in his mid-twenties, he also complained about difficulty forming a mature relationship with a nice woman. In many ways, the second analysis for each man was a continuation of the first.  Old conflicts were reworked but in a new arena.   It seems that each had terminated his child analysis with an unanalyzed positive erotic transference, which was a large hindrance to moving forward with heterosexual relationships.  Despite countertransference issues, which had prevented a more thorough evaluation of this positive transference, the author is reconsidering the prevailing wisdom of leaving the positive transference intact and unanalyzed.

Program Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to describe the advantages as well as the disadvantages of an adult patient being reanalyzed by his childhood analyst.

2. Participants will be able to explain how a reanalysis might be considered to be a continuation of the first analysis.

3. Participants will be able to assess the unintended consequences of not analyzing a child's positive transference to the analyst.
