"The Natural"
Steven Levy, M.D.

Discussant:
Monroe Pray, M.D.

Dr. Levy is editor of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), Bernard Holland Professor of Psychiatry at Emory University, and a Supervising and Training Analyst, and former director, at the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute. With “The Natural,” a loose reference to Bernard Malamud’s antihero Roy Hobbs, Dr. Levy explores whether there are “naturals” as psychoanalysts. Does the analytic procedure allow for a natural unfolding of inner life or must it be strategic and tactical? Are naturalness and authenticity realities or illusions?
